The exhibition tells a dramatic tale from WWII: the development of the nuclear bomb and the operations launched against the heavy water production at Vemork. On charts along the northern and southern walls you can follow the nuclear race between Germany, England, France and the United States of America. And you can see what part Vemork played in this incomparable warfare of research and science.
In the centre of the room you will find four sections that will tell you about the four different operations that were launched to prevent Nazi-Germany from acquiring heavy water.
You will also find an “atomic room” with details about nuclear energy and how it can be utilized. An individual section explains the production of heavy water at Vemork.
The heavy water operations were some of the most long-term and effective secret operations during WWII. The operations were executed with logic, endurance and ruthless courage. We offer you a chance to experience these operations, a close-up encounter in the very area that has made its way to the world map.
The Allies knew that the heavy water was an important piece in the German nuclear project. They feared that the Germans were ahead of them in the development of a nuclear weapon. Attacks launched against the heavy water production were an effective way of stopping the German project, neutralising the threat of Hitler’s atomic bomb.
The exhibition gives insight in the Allied force’s efforts to develop a nuclear bomb and their attempts to end the German’s nuclear project. Experience realistic scenes, meet the “saboteurs” up close and see equipment and items from the war.
